A minimum of 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's records.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. More than 80 people were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization countered with shooting, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives stated.

The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods close to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Local authorities said at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Local Reaction

Community members have described the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group has been growing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the operation, in addition to numerous weapons.
