Explosion Costs 3 Law Enforcement Officers During Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy
Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews went into the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
Each of the three officers killed served in the Carabinieri force.
Arrests and Aftermath
A man and a woman got detained at the scene and a third person who ran away after the explosion was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been transported to medical facility.
The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area displayed the structure left as a pile of rubble.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the three owners.
Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member triggered the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he added.
Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
He thought the explosion had taken place on a story above the doorway and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being turned on”.
Neighbor Statements
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told Italian media, noting that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
