The US region renowned for its colonial history, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is experiencing a rapid change. New research finds that New England is warming faster than almost anywhere else on the Earth.

Breakneck Pace of Change

The speed of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the continental United States, as per the study. The pace of its warming has apparently increased significantly in the past five years.

"The temperature is not only increasing, it's accelerating," stated a primary researcher on the project. "It's really accelerated in recent years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is moving in a new direction, after being relatively stable for millennia."

The research places the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating zones in the world, alongside the polar region and parts of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the American South," the scientist added.

Analysis Methodology and Results

For the analysis, researchers examined multiple data sources on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of the New England region.

They found that New England has warmed by an average of 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet warming by approximately 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.

"That is very fast warming, which is worrying," commented the researcher.

Notable Warming Trends

  • Minimum temperatures are rising more quickly than maximum temperatures.
  • Winters are warming at twice the rate of other times of year.
  • The harsh winter chill characteristic of the region is being diminished.

Marine Influences and the "Heat Battery"

A primary cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are absorbing the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy trapped by emissions.

In the region near New England, an influx of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is pushing heated ocean water into the coastal waters, concentrating heat along the shoreline that is then pushed further inland by prevailing winds.

"The excess heat from climate change is being held in the oceans like a massive battery," said the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the atmosphere and New England is a recipient of that energy."

Impacts on Life and Extremes

Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has experienced extreme weather shocks in recent years, including enormous flooding and prolonged dry spells.

The increasing temperatures poses a threat to iconic aspects of local culture:

  • Maple syrup production is facing challenges by changing seasonal patterns.
  • Cold-weather activities are disrupted; an hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been canceled or relocated multiple times due to unsafe ice conditions.
  • Winter tourism have struggled because of insufficient snowfall.

"I live just outside Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the ponds all the time," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much disappeared from large parts of southern New England."
